It’s that time of year again! That special time right after the Mayan Apocalypse, but right before the New Year, when Dirt Candy takes a holiday.
.
Holidays? We love holidays!!!
.
This year we’ll be closed from tonight, Saturday, December 22, until we re-open on Wednesday, January 2…2013!!! That’s in the future!
.
Heino wants you to take it easy until then.
.
Thanks so much for everyone’s support this year. You guys have been the best and, more than that, because of you the Dirt Candy cookbook and online store have thrived beyond even my grossly inflated expectations.
.
Thank you for everything and thank you…for the dove.
(Update: as of Tuesday, November 6, Dirt Candy has re-opened! Seriously. We’re open. You can eat here! People have been confused, so be confused no longer!)
.
OMG – SuperKillerPsychoStorm Sandy has hit New York! The second Hurricane Sandy stopped being overly dramatic in a desperate bid for attention, I strapped on my shoes and walked down to Dirt Candy to check out the damage. Fortunately there wasn’t any. No leaks, no explosions, no radioactive mutants squatting in the rubble and killing people for gasoline. Unfortunately, there is also no power and no one is sure when it’s coming back online. Con Edison says that it will be four days, but these are the same people who once told me that my power bill jumped by $2200 in one month because they mis-read my meter, so I’m not sure they’re the best judge of things.

Since there’s no way to know what’s going on, Dirt Candy is going to be closed for the rest of the week. I’ll still be heading to Austin to do the first vegetarian event ever at the Alamo Drafthouse (full, sense-shattering details here) and we’ll be open again on Tuesday, November 6 unless something bad happens in the interim. But keep your eyes on Facebook, or Twitter, or here, and I’ll let you guys know the second those plans change.
.
.
Of course, tomorrow I also have to head to my storage space on Avenue D, which got something like 4 – 6 feet of water. And my storage unit is in the basement. So it’s not looking good.
.
How all my customers look now that we are in the post-apocalyptic future!
From August 6 – 11, Dirt Candy will be closed for summer vacation. I’ll have the place up and running again and open for business on Tuesday, August 14, but don’t stop hitting refresh on the blog next week because mighty robots will still be posting updates.
Dirt Candy will be closed from today until June 19th for SUMMER VACATION! It can’t come soon enough. This past month has seen a tidal wave of family problems swallow me and my staff whole, so it’ll be nice to get away and relax.
It is Valentine’s Day and while I’m always suspicious of a holiday celebrating a priest who was beaten to death then beheaded, who am I to stand in the way of a national outpouring of love? (On a personal note, I prefer Lupercalia, the pagan holiday that Valentine’s Day replaced, but that’s mostly because its Wikipedia page mentions “shaggy thongs.”)
.
Let it never be said that Dirt Candy doesn’t love you!
In just 72 hours you will be giving your loved ones gifts and do you really want to run the risk of seeing disappointment in their eyes? The best way to ensure that they are in awe of your gift-purchasing abilities is to give them a Dirt Candy gift certificate. If you need one at the last minute, no problem! We can get it to you, and we sell them in all denominations. In fact, two days ago I sold a gift certificate for $76.85. The only way to get them is to call the restaurant between 10am and 5pm today (Thursday) or tomorrow (Friday) and talk to whoever answers the phone (212-228-7732). I’ll run your credit card and get it out to your loved one ASAP.
.
And on that note of holiday cheer, I have a present for all of you who’ve made 2011 so much fun: Dirt Candy’s family photo for the holidays. Note the Christmas sweaters.

In the back, from left to right: Justyna (my server); Vincent (prep man); Kristen (server and prep person); Armando (brand new dishwasher). In the front, from left to right: Travis (my new sous chef); me; and Danielle (the reigning queen of prep).

We’re super-thrilled to be welcoming in the New Year, too! Back Street Boys-style!

Dirt Candy: keeping it street!
.
Or maybe you’d prefer it with a little bit more holiday cheer?
It’s been an endless whirl of activity here and so the end of the year sort of snuck up on me. For some reason, the holiday season seems to be when everything goes down, from (mechanical) dishwashers breaking to (human) dishwashers leaving, and so this feels appropriate:

Also, we’ll all be taking a vacation and Dirt Candy will have special holiday hours. The restaurant will be closed from December 24 to January 2, re-opening on Tuesday, January 3.
I’m Canadian and so my Thanksgiving isn’t the same as American Thanksgiving. In Canada it’s the second Monday in October and it’s all about Martin Frobisher and the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest parade. However, I live in America now, so I have to make some grudging allowance for Thanksgiving USA.
.
Dirt Candy will be closed on Thursday, November 24 for Thanksgiving but we’ll be open during our normal hours for the rest of that week (Tues – Sat, 5:30pm until closing). See you down here! And in celebration of the holiday, here’s the trailer from Eli Roth’s THANKSGIVING:
Dirt Candy is going to be closed this Tuesday, October 18, because I’ve committed us to working at City Harvest’s Bid Against Hunger event that night. Basically, people pay a bunch of money for a ticket and then bid on auction items from restaurants in the city with the proceeds going to City Harvest’s programs committed to feeding the less fortunate. I work a lot with City Harvest because they do a great job of organization and they’ve got very low overhead. Over 90% of the money they raise goes towards their programs which work to help feed people in the New York area, and with the economy as bad as it is, food pantries and food banks need the support now more than ever.
.
.
We’ll be there dishing out the free food along with restaurants like Rao’s, Rosa Mexicano and Gramercy Tavern. If you want to buy a ticket, it’s for a good cause! Dirt Candy will be open again for business on Wednesday, Oct. 19th.
