3 Legs Good; 4 Legs Bad

No, we’re not repudiating Animalism, we just wanted to talk about our chairs which have three legs. When we were doing friends and family dinners before we opened, one of our guests was Florent (Grand Duchess of the Meat Packing district) and we were excited to see what he’d say about our food because if anyone has earned the right to have a meaningful opinion it’s Florent. But he didn’t want to talk about the food. Instead, in the middle of the meal he leapt to his feet and cried, “Oh my god! This chair has three legs!” He stood in the middle of the restaurant and exclaimed to his dining companion, “All my life I have wanted a chair with three legs! If only I had found this 20 years ago. Look, your feet can fit under it without hitting the legs!” And he was right.

Yes, our chairs have three legs. They’re the amazing Ant Chairs by Arne Jacobsen, one of the most famous designers of the Danish modern school. Originally created by Jacobsen in 1952 for the cafeteria of pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk, they’re named Ant Chairs because they look like an ant with its head raised.

Jacobsen gets deep food props both for designing the super-famous Egg Chair, but also for having his cutlery designs immortalized in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

Fun fact: Novo Nordisk are pioneers in diabetes research and do a long of diabetes education and outreach. Plus, their company logo is the Egyptian Apis bull. In ancient Egypt, Apis was a bull god and when a living bull was found who matched the markings of Apis (you know – white triangle on forehead, scarab mark under tongue, white vulture wing outline on back – the usual) the now-holy bull was brought to a temple, given a cow harem and worshipers could gaze adoringly at him through a special window while he lived splendidly in his bovine court. When he died he got a lavish and expensive funeral. An Apis bull probably lived better than the majority of Egyptian humans.

The Ant Chair is super-strong, has a great profile and saves floor space by only having three legs. Unfortunately, some customers have found that if they’ve had a few glasses of wine and they try to get up from the Ant Chair by shifting their weight to the side and sliding sort of forwards (rather than going back and up), they’re liable to wind up taking a spill. However, we don’t want this to stop since it’s free entertainment for the entire dining room and, after some mild initial embarrassment, no one has been a bad sport about it. After all, getting the combination of weight distribution, movement and gravity exactly right to take an Ant Chair-inspired stumble is pretty tricky and those who figure it out should be proud.
